Rohit Sharma equals Sachin Tendulkar’s record in first ODI vs Sri Lanka

Indian captain, Rohit Sharma continues to rewrite history books with his exceptional display of batting. In the ongoing first ODI between India and Sri Lanka, Sharma played a brilliant knock of 58 runs in 47 balls, including seven fours and three sixes.

Notably, he has taken retirement from T20I format after leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. Hence, he wasn’t part of the squad for the just concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka.

However, the Indian captain was asked to came back and participate in the ODI series. For the unversed, this the first ODI that India has played after the heart-breaking 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia.

Batting first, Sri Lanka had managed to score 230 runs on the board. In pursuit of the target, Sharma gave the team a rollicking start. He set his intentions quite clear after hitting a six off the second ball of the first over.

He went on to complete his half-century in just 33 deliveries. With that half-century, Rohit Sharma has matched Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most scores of fifty or more runs as an opener in international cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar has 120 scores of 50 or more in international cricket. He has scored 77 half-centuries and 43 centuries as an opener in international cricket. Rohit Sharma has now equaled that record. He now has 75 half-centuries and 45 centuries as an opener.

He is now fifth in the list with only five batsmen ahead of him. Graeme Smith (125), Desmond Haynes (131), Sanath Jayasuriya (136), Chris Gayle (144), and David Warner (146) comprise the top five list.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma also broke Eoin Morgan’s record during his 58-run knock vs Sri Lanka in the first ODI on Friday. He now tops of record of most sixes as captain international cricket, which was previously held by Morgan.

Sitting at number one spot, Rohit Sharma now has 234 sixes to his name in 124 matches as captain. Eoin Morgan dropped down to second with 233 sixes in 198 matches as captain.
