Mason Mount could be about to play a key role in Ruben Amorim’s revolution at Manchester United.

The former Chelsea man has not had a successful start to life at Old Trafford, having missed much of last season and this through injury.

Even when available, it was also not always obvious where he fit in former manager Erik ten Hag’s system, which relied on wide, fast wingers and a single number 10 in Bruno Fernandes.

However, reports this week claimed that Mount had been a stand-out star in training under Amorim and the new boss was quick to sing his praises when interviewed by club media on Friday.

“Mason Mount… I have to tell you I love that kid,” Amorim said.

“You can look in his eyes that he wants this so bad. And this is the most important thing for me.

“I know he was suffering from injuries, he was not on the pitch, but now he’s trying to stay fit and we hope he can continue to be fit, to show all the talent that he’s shown, for example, in Chelsea.”

The head coach was keen to point out that the 3-4-3 system he will employ could suit the 25 year old down to the ground.

“He played in this system [at Chelsea under Tuchel], so it’s perfect for him…I have two positions for Mason Mount, so he should be very happy!”

Amorim did not specify the two positions he had in mind, but one is sure to be as one of the two inside forwards playing behind the main striker.

The other could be in central midfield, but it might also make sense to play Mount as a wing back, particularly in potentially easier games where attack is more of the focus.

Mount’s versatility and tireless energy will certainly stand him in good stead under the new coach and if he can finally put his injury problems behind him, the sky could be the limit for the England man at Old Trafford.
