Harry Maguire is hopeful about potentially extending his stay at Manchester United, after having “positive” talks with the club.

Maguire’s current deal is set to run out at the end of the season, though United retain an option to extend it by another year, keeping him at the club until 2026.

The England international was close to joining West Ham in 2023, but the transfer fell through.

Since then, Maguire has found himself lower in the defensive hierarchy following the summer arrivals of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro.

However, after a standout performance in United’s dramatic 2-1 derby win over Manchester City on Sunday, the 31-year-old remains hopeful about his future at Old Trafford.

“I haven’t really thought about [my long-term future],” Maguire said.

“I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands. But, yeah, all the signs are positive at the moment, and the chat that I’m having is really positive.”

When asked whether discussions about a long-term contract are underway, Maguire simply responded, “Yeah.”

The centre-back was a surprise starter in Ruben Amorim’s lineup for the game at the Etihad.

Maguire delivered a solid defensive display, keeping Erling Haaland quiet as United scored two late goals to secure a dramatic win.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season for us and not much for our fans to cheer about, so it’s for them,” Maguire added.

“I thought the game was a 50-50 game, to be honest. Could have gone either way. It’s an improvement but still a long way to go.”

The win marked a significant result for Amorim, who has experienced mixed outcomes since replacing Erik ten Hag as United’s manager.

“I think you can see we have a good structure, a good style of play, the way that he wants us to work,” Maguire added.

“He’s tactically very good. He’s proven that he’s a winner.

“And, look, we’re still pretty new. I think he’s been here for a month now or so, and we’re really looking forward to where we can go and where we can take this club. I’m sure he’ll take it in a positive way.”
