The BRIT Awards just came to a conclusion, and all of our faves walked home with awards. Someone we were really holding out for? Our dance pop queen, Charli xcx. No, we haven’t forgotten about brat summer, and we’ll probably be listening to that album for the rest of our lives through every season. We’re so glad the BRITs saw what we saw in Charli!

Charli has had an undeniable year, taking her experimental brand of electronic and pop from underground raves to the heart of mainstream culture. Charli’s songwriting is distinctive, bold and relentlessly innovative, and, having been one of the UK’s leading songwriters for a number of years now, has taken her craft to new heights with her global phenomenon Brat. I’m delighted she has been recognised for this much deserved award.

In celebration of Charli winning Songwriter of the Year this year, we’re reflecting on our ten favorite Charli xcx lyrics that showcase her talent and lyrical genius.

“George says, “I’m just paranoid”/Says he just don’t see it, he’s so naive/I’m embarrassed to have it, but need the sympathy”

‘Sympathy Is A Knife’ will forever be that girl. We often turn to this song when we need a gentle reminder that sometimes life is just not that serious, and we’re being paranoid. You’ll also always find us listening to the remix version of this song with Ariana Grande. We need them to collab again!

‘I Might Say Something Stupid’ is Charli at her most vulnerable. When we heard this song for the first time, a small tear slid down our cheeks, and we felt every word that Charli was singing. This song is full of amazing lyrical moments, and to be honest, it may be one of our favorites from brat.

“I think we’re totally different/But opposites do attract/Maybe we’re so meant to be/Just you and me”

‘Girl, So Confusing’ is something we say in the hive all the time. Life is so confusing, especially when you’re just a girly pop trying to move through life day by day. We’re so glad that Charli feels the same! We absolutely adored this song on its own when it came out, but when our girl Lorde decided to jump on it, we fell in love with it even more. This remix was definitely our song of the year in 2024!

“Yeah, she’s in her mid-20s, real intelligent/Hedonistic with the gravel, drawing dead eyes”

‘Mean Girls’ is so iconic, you know we just had to include it in our list here. When we heard this song for the first time, we thought Charli was spying on us…because it’s extremely accurate. Yes, we’re worshiping Lana Del Rey in our AirPods and crying at the same time. Sorry, not sorry.

“You say I’m turning evil/I’ll say I’m finally pure/Shine bright in my reflection/Think I lost myself before”

‘Used To Know Me’ is one of those songs from the CRASH album that just makes us feel seen. Whenever we need a little confidence boost and a reminder that we’re on the right path (and we don’t need anyone else’s opinion), we stream this song and sing every lyric at the top of our lungs. It’s what Charli would want.

“Speedin’ like Alonso just to crash your party”

This lyric from ‘Vroom Vroom’ is just too iconic. An F1 reference? Yes, please, Charli! If we were professional racecar drivers, we’d probably listen to this song while speeding in between lanes.

“Von Dutch, cult classic but I still pop”

‘Von Dutch’ is full of genius lyrical moments and this song alone deserves all the songwriting awards. It had to be said; this lyric is pop perfection and encompasses everything we love about pop culture. Charli just knows how to write a catchy song with addicting lyrics that catch everyone by surprise.

“Yuck, that boy’s so mushy/Sending me flowers, I’m just tryna get lucky”

‘Yuck’ is one of our favorite Charli xcx songs because Charli is just saying what we’re all thinking. Crushes are gross and we don’t want to get cooties. But also, maybe we do want to fall in love, too? Who knows, really…

“Nowadays, I only eat at the good restaurants/But honestly, I’m always thinkin’ ’bout my weight”

‘Rewind’ is one of the standouts on brat and has dozens of lyrical moments that stand out to us. Brutal honesty runs through the musical veins of brat, and we’re totally here for it. Charli keeps it real on this track, and we’re here for every moment, even if she’s calling us out.

“She’s a radiant mother and he’s a beautiful father/And now they both know these things that I don’t”

‘I Think About It All The Time’ is another brutally honest track from Charli xcx. We commend her for writing this song! One day, we hope to hear this live, but for now, we’ll just cry privately in our bedrooms because these lyrics are just that real.

So, do you think Charli xcx deserved the Songwriter of the Year award at the BRITs this year? Which lyric of hers do you resonate with the most? Let us know in the comments below or by buzzing with us over on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook 🐝
