We’ve been obsessed with every pre-release leading up to Lisa‘s much-awaited first solo full album. We saw every side of Lisa unfold with each song, and we saw her own every single one of the different styles and sides she explored. It all amounted to this: Alter Ego is out, and it’s all ours to listen to no end.
As expected, Lisa explored different styles in Alter Ego and established her undeniable charisma in every single one of those tracks. From track one to the last, this album screams Lisa’s name with its bold, confident, unapologetic energy. Alter Ego, even with its different styles and influences, gives an unforgettable, cohesive, and unique vibe—one that screams Lisa‘s name. The entire album is incredible, but here are some of our highlights!
‘Born Again’
Yes, ‘BORN AGAIN‘ is a pre-release single, but it’s been almost a month, and we haven’t been able to stop thinking about it (nor listening to it, for that matter). As an album opener, this track hits even more. Lisa brought on several incredible artists in Alter Ego, and it’s one of the many highlights. Still, the combination of Lisa with Raye and Doja Cat is unbeatable. Lisa’s charisma, Raye‘s mind blowing vocals, and Doja Cat‘s uniqueness all in one catchy, empowering track could only lead to perfection. And indeed, ‘BORN AGAIN,’ as the first track of Alter Ego, shows Lisa’s new beginning. And we, too, were never the same after listening to this song.
‘Chill’
After some incredible pre-releases, the bar was set quite high for the songs we would only listen to when the full album was released. With so many new songs, ‘Chill’ still managed to be an unforgettable highlight in Alter Ego easily. It’s not only that it is the definition of catchy, but ‘Chill’ shows a very cool, laid-back, and seemingly effortless side of Lisa’s voice and singing as she blends in such a satisfactory way with the rhythm and bass of the song. ‘Chill’ is that one song you can get out of your head even after Alter Ego is done, and it makes you want to play it all over again.
‘Lifestyle’
There is a recurrent theme in Alter Ego: confidence, self-love, and empowerment. We see these themes explored in different, unique ways through several tracks, but ‘Lifestyle’ is one of the boldest and unapologetic tracks in Alter Ego. Apart from showcasing perfectly what the album and Lisa are all about, it’s an incredible hip-hop track that raises the energy. In ‘Lifestyle,’ Lisa embraces her success and the hard work that led her to where she is. The chanted chorus turns ‘Lifetyle’ into an absolute anthem. It’s a celebration of life, talent, and hard work.
‘Dream’
Yes, Lisa shows power and confidence all through Alter Ego, but she also showcases a softer side. We got ‘Moonlit Floor‘ as a pre-release, a soft love song, but we also had ‘Dream,’ which stands out on the first listen. ‘Dream’ is a heartbreaking song about the aftermath of a relationship that is hard to let go. With its satisfying melodies and beautiful emotions, ‘Dream’ is the moment where Lisa shows vulnerability and showcases her voice in a different light. The sad pop song comes to counter all the power in the rest of the album with its dreaminess and emotional vocals, but it’s a moment that feels necessary so that Lisa can explore her artistry to her full potential.
‘FXCK UP THE WORLD’
Well, of course, there was no way around ‘FXCK UP THE WORLD.’ It’s the single released along with the album, and with good reason. Whether it’s the version with Future or the solo version, ‘FXCK UP THE WORLD’ holds so much power. While it may not be an instant love for everyone, ‘FXCK UP THE WORLD’ just keeps growing until taking over all your thoughts. Lisa’s rap has always been some of our favorite parts of BLACKPINK‘s music, and while that’s an aspect of her artistry that shines throughout the album, there’s no song quite like ‘FXCK UP THE WORLD’ when it comes to her rapping. ‘FXCK UP THE WORLD’ is such bad*ss unapologetic song, but it’s also fun and full of life. Truly a one-of-a-kind song for a one-of-a-kind artist like Lisa.
