After ‘EASY‘ and ‘CRAZY,’ ‘HOT’ is here to close the incredible trilogy LE SSERAFIM have been giving us since last year, and it’s the best one so far. It’s been established time and time again that LE SSERAFIM can do any concept or genre and own it. They’ve never explored more than with this trilogy, both in sound and in themes. And indeed, HOT is one of LE SSERAFIM‘s most mature, cohesive, and incredible mini-albums yet. And here’s exactly why everyone should be listening to it now!
The Title Track
Even with so many incredible and iconic title tracks, ‘HOT’ stands out in LE SSERAFIM‘s discography. LE SSERAFIM are known for their bold, confident tracks, but ‘HOT’ doesn’t exactly fit that category. It has that LE SSERAFIM aura overflowing with confidence, of course, but it is also their most melodic title track to date – and what a melody. Inspired by disco music, ‘HOT’ serves absolute pop perfection with a theme surrounding love and passion – their first title track to tackle such a theme. ‘HOT’ has the prettiest melodies and is extremely catchy, especially thanks to LE SSERAFIM‘s vocals, which make the song shine. Accompanied by one of their most artistic music video to date, there is no doubt that ‘HOT’ is an instant highlight in LE SSERAFIM’s entire discography.
The B-Sides
This trilogy has served us some of LE SSERAFIM’s most iconic b-sides, so don’t think HOT doesn’t have the same caliber and quality when it comes to the songs to complete the title track. ‘Born Fire’ follows the tradition of LE SSERAFIM‘s intros. This time, the intro song lures you into a world of passion, highly intense feelings, and a new beginning. The final line, ‘The Flame is Born,’ embodies the mini-album and its themes in its entirety.
It’s easy to notice why ‘Come Over‘ is being the promoted b-side, and the choreography (especially that domino intro) makes the track even more addictive. But at its core, ‘Come Over’ is an inviting, fun, and quirky track that helps you let go of all worries with an infectious beat. It is the brightest track in HOT as ‘Ash’ takes a different route. With Yunjin‘s participation in the creation of the track, ‘Ash’ is not far from being LE SSERAFIM‘s best song, period. It’s a vulnerable, personal, and dark track that touches on personal struggles and mental health. Yet, it presents the falls as a starting point, using the metaphor of rising from the ashes and rebirth. All of this, mixed with a perfect electro-house sound, makes ‘Ash’ more than a masterpiece.
It’s difficult to follow such a masterpiece, but ‘So Cynical (Badum)’ does an incredible job by bringing back brightness with hints of darkness still. It brings the album full circle as it brings back the topic of love and passion, representing the rebirth after the fall and bringing this trilogy to an absolutely perfect end.
HOT is a new side to LE SSERAFIM, but equally as good as everything we’ve seen from them so far – if not better. HOT already feels like a staple in their discography, with some of the best songs to date. This new mini-album represents LE SSERAFIM‘s growth as performers, artists, and as a group, moving toward the end of a cycle as they’re reborn.
