Charlotte Edwards has been announced as the new Head Coach of the England Women’s team.

The former England captain, who represented her country over 300 times, has headed up the women’s coaching set-up at Utilita Bowl since 2020.

Edwards moved to Hampshire in 2017, having previously played for Kent, where she spent the final few years of her career as a player, winning Division Two of the Women’s County Championship before taking the team to the title the following summer.

She then became Director of Women’s Cricket at the Club in 2018 and took over as Southern Vipers’ head coach in 2020.

Southern Vipers

She oversaw the successful first year of the Vipers in the regional era, coaching the team to silverware in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, and repeated the achievement the following year.

2022 saw the Vipers win their first T20 trophy, named after Charlotte Edwards, before both she and captain Georgia Adams helped the team to become the first regional side to hold both domestic trophies at the same time in 2023.

Over a 20-year playing career, she won two World Cups and lifted the Ashes five times.

Since retiring from playing, Edwards has coached across English domestic cricket and global T20 leagues, enjoying success with Southern Vipers in regional cricket where she won five trophies, Southern Brave in The Hundred, Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League and Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League.

Reflecting on her time at Hampshire, Charlotte Edwards said: “I’ve had an amazing eight years at the Club and am so grateful for the support I have received from the players, staff and supporters.

“Everyone at Hampshire is absolutely committed to the women’s game and that commitment has shown through in the on-field successes we have all enjoyed.“I am particularly thankful to Rod (Bransgrove) for the faith he put in me as I started my coaching journey and every step of the way since.

“It has been a truly special time, and it will be very difficult to leave the place that has become my home. I’m sure that Hampshire will continue to enjoy success on and off the field and look forward to returning to Utilita Bowl with the England team.”

Adam Carty

Adam Carty, Director of Women’s Cricket at Hampshire Cricket, said: “It’s been a wonderful five-year period for the region, having Lottie at the helm as head coach. Although it always felt inevitable, I received the news with a heavy heart – such is the strength and depth of our relationship.

“I am sure the whole Hampshire family wish Lottie well in her next venture. I thank her for her unwavering commitment and dedication to the cause.

“Her influence has been unparalleled toward our organisation winning five domestic titles in five years. If we were to lose her to anyone, I am proud that her leaving is a result of her being called up to lead our national team.

“This reflects the strength of our organisation to produce and develop great people, worthy of national team consideration.

“In Hampshire, we have a strong and robust support team, the majority of whom have been on the women’s elite domestic professional journey since season one. We look to the future with optimism and ambition, with a playing squad filled with established domestic performers and exciting young talent.

“We remain positive in our intent to be competitive across all tier one competitions in 2025.

“As for the next head coach, we are working tirelessly to ensure that we execute short, and mid-term plans to have the best people in place to serve our on-field performance alongside maintaining our organisation’s culture and values.”

Edwards Delighted

On becoming England Women’s Head Coach, Edwards added: “I am so delighted to once again be part of the leadership of the England Women’s cricket team, and I cannot wait to take this team forward and drive us to success.

“It means the world to me to have the three lions on my chest once again. Leading England as captain was my life for 10 years and I will forever be passionate about this team and our legacy.

“We have such a talented group of players, and I am excited about working with them and improving them both as individuals and as a team.”
