When you’ve had a long day, there is nothing like the journey home. And nothing embodied that more than the season finale of The Pitt and Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) walking away from the emergency room.

In season 1 episode 15, we get to see the wind down of a day that included a mass shooting, assault, finding out Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) had a drug problem, and at least 3 different breakdowns for Robby. There was a lot for him to unpack. But the finale shot of the episode really nailed what it feels like when everything becomes a little too overwhelming.

At the start of the season, we saw Robby walk into work with his headphones on, listening to music, and enjoying the start of his day. Little did he know what was waiting for him but he at least was trying to start the day off on the right foot. Which is what makes Robby’s journey home hit that much harder.

After he goes to have a drink outside the hospital with some of the staff and his med students, Robby goes to leave and puts his headphones back on, walking down the same road he came into work on and seeing him back with his music just hits.

We get to learn a lot in those final moments.  Dr. Jack Abbott (Shawn Hatosy) finds Robby on the roof, they have a heart to heart, and the two ER doctors relate on a deeper level than we’ve seen all season long. It’s beautiful, cathartic, and then Robby leaves with his music.

As someone who listens to music as a way of coping and relaxing, I really understood him in that instance and related to Robby’s exhausting day.

Sometimes, you just need you and the music

You don’t know how your day is going to go when you start it. Sometimes, you wake up and instantly are confronted with some task you have to fix or a crisis to solve. Other times, it is a calm day you can walk away from without too much of a struggle. While The Pitt shows us one day in the lives of this ER crew, I do love that the show allows us these moments that all of us can find relatable.

Who hasn’t started your day hopeful and fresh and watched it all fall apart? Robby walking away from work with his music there to comfort him is something that I have felt in my life and it’s weirdly relatable, even though my days do not include saving lives.

Maybe this isn’t relatable for everyone but to me, I understood every moment that Dr. Robby went through in this day. When times get tough, I want nothing more than to just pick a song I love and tune everything else out. Knowing that this man, who spent his day saving lives and dealing with everything under the sun, does the same thing? Weirdly comforting!

So, if you, like Dr. Robby, need a break? Maybe take a moment and listen to come good tunes. Even the best ER doctor out there does it!
