“Mauritius is like a ‘Mini India’,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, addressing a gathering of the Indian community at a special event held at the Trianon Convention Centre in Mauritius.
“Mauritius is not just a partner country… For us, Mauritius is family… Mauritius is at the heart of India’s SAGAR vision,” said PM Modi. His Mauritian counterpart, HE Navinchandra Ramgoolam, was present at the event.

Welcoming PM Modi at the event, the Mauritian PM said that his country would be conferring its highest civilian award, Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK) on the Indian PM during the National Day celebrations. PM Modi expressed his gratitude to the Mauritian PM for the exceptional honour.
Noting that India is privileged to be a close development partner of Mauritius, PM Modi said that special ties between both countries have played a key role in India’s SAGAR Vision and its engagement with the Global South. He also praised Mauritius’s partnership in the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuels Alliance initiatives.

Indian Community in Mauritius
The event saw enthusiastic participation from the Indian diaspora, including students, professionals, socio-cultural organisations and business leaders.
Several Ministers, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries from Mauritius were also in attendance.
PM Modi hands over Overseas Citizen of India cards to PM Ramgoolam and his spouse Veena Ramgoolam
In a special gesture, PM Modi handed over OCI cards to the Mauritian PM and his spouse, Veena Ramgoolam. Conveying greetings to the Mauritian people on the occasion of their National Day, PM Modi highlighted the shared heritage and familial connections between both countries.
