The Boyz wrapped up 2024 with the closure of a huge chapter of their life after completing seven years together, moving from their company, and signing as 11 members with a new company. 2025 is officially their new page and new era, and The Boyz did not waste a single second. Unexpected is The Boyz’s latest comeback, their third full-length album, and one hell of a beginning for this new chapter in their career!
‘VVV’
The Boyz are aces when it comes to concepts – any concept really. Some of their most brilliant comebacks have been with bright songs. ‘VVV’ definitely fits that category, but at its core, this new title track is truly its own thing. This title track is a bright yet mature celebratory song. ‘VVV’ stands for the Latin phrase: ‘Veni, vidi, vici,’ meaning ‘I came, I saw, I conquered.’ The sentiment of overcoming the impossible, having resilience, and taking the win is all over the song. ‘VVV’ is hopeful, cheerful, and a boost of confidence. More than anything, it feels fitting that the song would be translated into a fight in a ring for the music video. The Boyz have always had insane visuals, gorgeous settings, and mind-blowing choreographies: ‘VVV’ is exactly that.
As The Boyz come together, it feels like they’re unstoppable and the sentiment translates to the listener. There’s nothing you can’t do with ‘VVV.’
Unexpected
For a full-length album, The Boyz delivered when it comes to their b-sides. The opening track let us know right at the bat that The Boyz had put their everything into this album. ‘Feel That Bass’ is a sub-unit track with Jacob, Juyeon, Kevin, Sunwoo, and Eric, and indeed, the bass is felt. In addition to a groovy infectious sound that works perfectly as an introduction to ‘VVV,’ Sunwoo‘s verse and his back and forth with Eric is absolute fire. It’s the perfect intro track and an easy favorite from the album.
Despite the energy boost of ‘VVV,’ many songs in Unexpected are quite smooth and calm, and they show The Boyz‘s vocals and RnB influence. ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Rose’ are two smooth and soft songs. They both tackle the theme of love but in different ways. While ‘Starry Night’ is brighter, ‘Rose’ feels darker with its RnB influence and beautiful use of imagery to describe a love that isn’t as black and white. ‘Ain’t Salty,’ not to be confused with ‘Salty’ from The Chaser, is another b-side that shines right from the first listen. This ballad feels grand and dramatic in the best way possible. It has a dark undertone and gives way for the most perfect song for The Boyz.
‘Rock and Roll’ is the song that will definitely get stuck in your head. The infectious, seductive guitar mixed with their falsetto, especially in the chorus, is pure musical perfection. It scratches the right side of our brain every single time. ‘Nothing’ is a 4-minute song that feels unique to The Boyz, reminiscent of their early sound but with some of their best lyrics. ‘Nothing’ isn’t just a song; it’s almost an entire story in itself as it relates to the complicated emotions behind a falling out.
But now, the real star of Unexpected is, without a single doubt: ‘Miss Demeanor.’ There are few words to describe just how excellent this song is. Its groovy bass makes it catchy, but it’s the melodies that make it so infectious yet subtle. ‘Miss Demeanor’ is a perfect b-side – and could even be a title track if you ask us.
The last track follows it in Unexpected, ‘Cross Over.’ This song feels extra special as it was written by all the members. ‘Cross Over’ is a song filled with love and a sentiment of being grateful for how far they’ve come in their journey. It’s emotional yet hopeful and a beautiful dedication to their fans. ‘Cross Over’ is all about a new beginning and meeting in every life, in every chapter. But ‘Cross Over’ is far from being a sad song. Its energy is explosive with its soft EDM influence, almost reminiscent of a song like ‘4EVER.’
‘Cross Over’ and Unexpected as a whole is the perfect demonstration of the bond The Boyz have to each other and their fans and how it is the one reason why they’ve come so far and have continued to overcome the odds. This is a new era for The Boyz, one that already feels their most authentic and passionate, and we’re here for it.
