The 2024/25 FA Cup third round began with three matches on Thursday, including Everton’s first game without Sean Dyche.

The Toffees sacked their manager hours before kick-off against League One strugglers Peterborough United at Goodison Park.

Fellow Premier League side Fulham hosted Championship visitors Watford, while second-tier teams Sheffield United and Cardiff City met at Bramall Lane.

Everton vs Peterborough

Coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman took charge of Everton following Dyche’s departure, overseeing their first goal in this season’s FA Cup courtesy of Beto’s composed finish from Harrison Armstrong’s pass.

Orel Mangala had earlier hit a post with a volley for the home side, and Iliman Ndiaye rolled in an added-time penalty to cap their 2-0 win. Peterborough are now winless in six matches, losing five times along the way.

Fulham vs Watford: Cottagers through

After Rodrigo Muniz scored from Adama Traore’s cross to give Fulham a 26th-minute lead, Rocco Vata bagged what is certain to be one of the goals of the round with a 30-yard equaliser seven minutes later.

Joachim Andersen volleyed in, Raul Jimenez scored his third penalty in five days and Timothy Castagne headed in Martial Godo’s cross as the hosts won 4-1 to hand Watford a fourth consecutive defeat.

Sheffield United vs Cardiff: Ashford goal wins tie

Third-placed in the second tier, Sheffield United are 29 points above second-bottom Cardiff – but The Bluebirds scored the only goal of the game when Cian Ashford won possession in a dangerous area and slotted in after 19 minutes.

Harrison Burrows came closest for The Blades, curling a shot against a post late on as his side slipped to a third defeat in five games.
